When in doubt, Obama adds to debt

President Obama says "some powerful special interests" have been talking about him "like a dog," and it's true, especially that incredibly, awesomely powerful interest known as the American public, but there is a way out.

He can quit coming up with policy ideas like an immediate $50 billion, anti-recession expenditure to be part of the creation of a major new federal apparatus known as an infrastructure bank.

What a joke

OUR VIEW: Sound advice for legislators

Utah business executives offered some specific advice for the Utah Legislature. The executives, who are pessimistic about their firms in the months ahead, want legislators to focus closely on business-growth policies and not waste time on so-called "message" bills that waste tax dollars as well as constituents' patience.

On that we agree. We don't need a resolution promising to save Utah from imaginary fears that liberals or the federal government will take away gun rights, or property rights, or insert cause here. We also add that legislators should not get Utah involved in long, costly court battles that the state would likely lose. Business wants Utah's Legislature to focus on the economy. Here are some suggestions from the executives, courtesy of Zions Bank's Utah Quarterly Economic Forecast:

Sending our jobs overseas added to our woes

So easily the Republic Party seem to forget the mess they created when George W. Bush was in office. President Obama has been handed a pile of you know what and given a teaspoon to clean it up! Big Corporations want the tax breaks to continue while they outsoure our jobs overseas. This way they pocket even bigger profits. Then when President Obama wants to end these tax breaks they receive Republicans scream that he will cause the loss of jobs. If these (and there are many) corporations would bring back our jobs from India, the Phillipines, Mexico, etc. we would have plenty of jobs to go around. But then they would have to pay Americans liveable wages and Health Insurance Benefits and this would mean less money in their pockets.

Top of Utah needs a BMX track

(UNEDITED)Several years ago, my son, was racing BMX. At that time, they raced at 4th street park in Ogden. Jared(my son) and two of his other cousins became quite good, and received several trophies. Now, there is no BMX track in Ogden, and the closest one is out by 9000 South in SLC, and clear out west, RAD BMX.

We need solution to 'anchor baby' problem

(UNEDITED)Anchor babies have finally become a big issue. I guess no one knew this was happening till the immigration debate came up. It's almost broke the state of California with the costs. Many illegal immigrants come to our country, risking their life, just to have their child in America.

The 14th amendment to the constitution states all persons born in America are to become citizens, just for being born here. Fine, that doesn't automatically give citizenship to the parents, uncle, aunt, grandparents, etc. Your baby is now a citizen but you aren't. Either take the child with you back to your country, or arrange for someone in America to raise the child for you. There are a lot of people who will adopt your baby, now it is a citizen.

Scriptures may offer help in difficult times

(UNEDITED)How dare Ryan Jenkins write an editorial promoting the reading of the scriptures! Doesn't he know this is not a politically correct declaration? Is he unaware of the great and continuous push by many to teach that faith and reliance in the Supreme Being is out, faith in government intervention in all things is in? Is he suggesting the scriptures have answers to our problems, when everyone knows it's to the Politicians we must look for help? Where did Ryan Jenkins get this kind of moxie? Furthermore, how could the Standard-Examiner allow such a commentary to be actually printed? Isn't there some kind of law against this, or some extrapolation of a law such as that because prayers and statements of faith in God are not allowed in schools, then perhaps they should not be allowed in newspapers either, because some school children might get hold of and read it?

Mayor should spend 'wish list' funds on gang control

(UNEDITED)I very seldom pick up the paper, except the sports, and read it. Sunday Sept. 5th, I did. First I read the Trece gang story, then, Mayor Godfreys wish list. While the Mayors wish list is all good, I see it as misguided. AND, while the pending injunction against the Trece gang is all good, I dont see it putting a curb on their activities. Does anyone really believe that those THUGS are going to KOW-TOW to an 11:00 pm curfew? I sure dont! The way I see it (and this is just me) is that they will continue on with their THUGGERY as usual, maybe even step it up a notch or two!

Taxpayers should not bail out pension plans

(UNEDITED)Are you ready for the next outrageous attack on the Tax Payer's pocketbook? Big Labor, after contributing hundred of millions of dollars to elect Liberals to congress, after giving themselves large six figure salaries, flying around in private jets, and staying in four star hotels, the big labor Unions are short of funds in their pension plans. They need 167 Billion dollars. Senate Democrat, Bob Casey and House Democrat Earl Pomeroy, supported by the Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, have introduced a bill to bailout these pension plans. No Senate Republicans have signed onto the bill. Unfortunately in the House, eight Republicans have joined with the Democrats to spend more tax money to bail out people who have made costly decisions. This is reportedly not a one time bailout, but would be an ongoing entitlement program funded by taxpayers, and would guarantee an annual benefit of $21,000.

Shooting would be a kinder death for smokers

(UNEDITED)This is in response to Mr. Hill's letter Sept. 5. I assume from your remarks Mr. Hill that you are a smoker. So was my brother. He passed away Nov. of last year. I was the one that took him to the Dr. He told him he had never seen lungs as bad as his in any one still alive.

He gave him 18 months to live. He lived 6. This was after 3-4 years on oxygen and hundreds of Dr. appointments. I was at the hospital when a Dr. described what he had done to his lungs and the crap that was in them.

Gangs take away our right to a safe neighborhood

(UNEDITED)People all over the country and in Ogden live behind bars as prisoners in their own homes because a few people in their community decide that being a gang member is a good career choice. The vast majority of inner city residents are denied their basic constitutional rights to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" by a small group of home grown urban terrorists. The gang problem is so bad inSouthern California no amount of money can move you into a neighborhood that does not have a gang problem. If gang member parents are raising their children to live "the life" then perhaps that is an issue DCFS needs to look into. Being a gang member or other criminal is a choice...the vast majority of the people that grow up and live in the same or worse circumstances do not become criminals...most people living in inner cities are good poeple trying to live a good life...they suffer under the oppression inflicted on them by our own home grown version of theTaliban.

The demolition of grandma's home

I grew up in Kaysville and have always believed that my hometown was a unique and very special place rich in history. My grandmother's home was like a jewel, located in the center of town. It was an historic red brick home with beautiful stained-glass windows, gables and a bar tile roof.

Even smaller kids should get to play football

(UNEDIED)So today my 7 year old son sat outside in the heat on the sidelines while his team played, he played 1 play... the entire 4 quarters and in overtime.. (1) Why is this? because he is small and not so good yet..and he has 5 coaches that all have sons on the team that are older and know more about football. Today im very ashamed to be a supporter of the Ogden Tigers. I had to bring my 7 year old home and explain to him why he did'nt get his 10 plays. Because to some people winning is more important then learning to work together as a team. and more important then a little boys feelings.

Most Americans oppose controversial mosque

(UNEDITED)This is why Washington is out of touch with the people. There never was a question of an individuals right to build a Mosque in the United States. Why do the elites still question the patriots not wanting the Mosque built at Ground Zero (or 2 blocks from it)? It is not a matter of the right to build, rather the larger conern, is it the right thing to do?

ATV club promotes the use of helmets

(UNEDITED)First of all I would like to than the Standard-Examiner for its coverage of the Take Back Utah Rally held Saturday, Aug.28 in downtown Salt Lake. However your editorial published Friday, Sept. 3 titled "Send in the helmets" did not reflect actual riding conditions on the trails. At the rally the speeds were less than 10 miles per hour and most of the riders I talked to wanted to be shown as actual people, not just heads in helmets. On the trail conditions are very different. Wearing a helmet is not only recommended, but is a life-saver as well.

Democrats backing tea party candidates

Vice President Biden gave his view of the opposition in this fall's elections at a recent Democratic gathering:

"(T)his ain't your father's Republican Party. This is the Republican Tea Party."

Uh-oh. We know what that means. People who are worried about taxes, spending and debt. People who will stand up in a town-hall meeting and challenge lawmakers -- even if it means hurting politicians' feelings.

Obviously, for Democrats, that means we're talking people who are racist (if you believe the NAACP and others) and un-American, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the opponents of health-care reform last summer.
