SLIDESHOW: Region 1 Girls Tennis
OGDEN -- The steady wind that floated across Mount Ogden Park on Tuesday afternoon brought with it both a changing of the guard and an air of familiarity to this year's Region 1 girls tennis championship.
Weber High School's stellar senior star Mary Anne Macfarlane capped her Region 1 career with her fourth consecutive league championship at No. 1 singles.
It was also the final capstone of the incredible streak by the Macfarlane family, with Mary Anne's win capturing the 11th consecutive league title won by a member of her family.
The streak began with Mary Anne's sister, Hadley, in 1999. Hadley won three straight, followed by their sister, Lauren, who captured four straight from 2002-05. Mary Anne won her first as a freshman in 2006 and carried it through Tuesday's win.
"Every match I play, it doesn't matter what level it's at, I try to learn something from," said Mary Anne. "I want to improve, I want to get better. Every match is a pressure situation."
Macfarlane captured the No. 1 singles title, topping Davis' Alexis Turley, 6-0, 6-2. The two points Turley gained in the second set were the only two scored against Macfarlane during her three matches at the region meet.
"It's a proud moment for me," said Weber coach Carolyn Macfarlane of her daughter's victory. "It's the end of an era for my family. The thing that's been fun is that we've (Weber) worked hard as a team. I think all of the girls realize it's about the team concept. The team is always bigger than an individual. All of our players are very supportive of one another."
Viewmont entered the Region 1 meet with a one-point advantage over Davis, with the two long-time league powerhouses slugging it out to until almost the final set before the Vikings captured the league title by a mere point, 34-33.
"I'd say it pretty much went as expected," said Syracuse coach Jerry Hogge. "Every year it's a tight battle between Viewmont and Davis. There weren't any real upsets."
Davis' Natalie Clark claimed the No. 2 singles title, defeating Weber's Carley Lloyd 6-7(10), 6-3, 6-0.
After winning the first set, Lloyd was within 4-3 in the second, but Clark ignited in winning eight straight games to capture the match.
At No. 3 singles, Viewmont's Jasmine Godfrey and Davis' Chelsey Hanni battled in what would be the decisive match of the region meet, with Godfrey taking the 6-3, 7-5 win to send the Vikings' gathered players and fans into celebration.
The Vikings also claimed both doubles titles. Viewmont's Hilary Bloomfield and Rachel Rawlings defeated Davis' Whitney Jorgenson and Merriesa Gilbert, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. It was the second straight year Bloomfield was part of the region-winning doubles team, while Rawlings was part of last year's No. 2 doubles runner-up.
At No. 2 doubles, Viewmont's Alyssa St. Jeor and McKelle Sanders defeated Davis' Ashley Hampton and Kira Sparks.
The state 5-A meet is scheduled for Oct. 8th and 10th at Salt Lake City's Liberty Park.
